Smile lines are the vertical lines that extend from the side of the nose down to the mouth. They are also known as nasolabial lines or nasolabial folds.
Nasolabial lines/folds are a common complaint within our Crosby clinic. When patients present, they often expect us to suggest filling these lines with dermal filler immediately to help soften them. However during consultation we assess the full face and often recommend mid-face support in the form of cheek contouring first.
This treatment uses hyaluronic acid dermal filler to support the fat pads in the cheek area which in turn lifts and pulls back the volume that is 'falling' into the nasolabial region. Injecting the nasolabial lines before supporting the mid-face can lead to a bulking and an unnatural appearance. Once the mid-face has been supported the area is then reassessed and may then be treated directly with dermal fillers. We often recommend dermal filler treatments to be carried out in a staged approach to achieve the best and most natural results.
As well as using hyaluronic acid dermal fillers to help restore the lost volume in the mid-face and support the fat pads in this region there are other options available to help lift the nasolabial lines/folds. These options may include collagen stimulation through radiofrequency using
Endymed Skin tightening, or a combination of radiofrequency with needling;
Endymed Intensif, or needling with
microneedling, commencing a
medical-grade skin care system, or even surgery. All your options will be discussed with you at your consultation appointment.

This patient wanted to reduce the depth of the nasolabial fold. A hyaluronic acid dermal filler was placed using a cannula to reduce the folds giving a natural and soft appearance.
Yes, dermal filler can be used to help improve the appearance of smile lines. However, the correct filler is required for this area. Juvederm® and Belotero® have a portfolio of fillers available to suit different areas of the face. For example we would not want to inject the same dermal filler in the delicate lip tissue as in the strong structural jawline.
Smile lines will usually start to appear in your 20's and 30's. Although we can always see smile lines when actively smiling, when we are younger, these disappear again when relaxing your face. There are a number of factors that can affect the appearance of the smile lines and the age at which they appear.
Smile lines are inevitable due to the ageing process and natural loss of elasticity in the skin and the lack of support from our fat pads in our face that move downwards overtime.
For some, dermal filler is not an option, therefore there are other treatments available to help stimulate your own collagen, help tighten and improve the appearance of smile lines. These treatments include:
Endymed Fractional Resurfacing
