These lines are vertical lines that appear from the border of the lip extending up towards the nose or down towards the chin. We may also see a horizontal line that runs across the philtrim, underneath the nostrils particularly when speaking.
There are several reasons why perioral lines form; Intrinsic ageing, which leads to loss of collagen, hyaluronic acid and a decreased skin tone. The muscle surrounding the area which we use consistently for eating, drinking and talking, becomes tired. Fat layers and bone density in the area reduce with age, which results in loss of elasticity and support for the tissues in the area. Extrinsic factors such as UV exposure, sun-bed use and smoking also contribute to increased ageing in the skin.
Depending on the severity of the lines, a staged-approach may be required using layers of dermal fillers or a combination treatment may be recommended which could include medical-grade skincare, skin peels, botulinum toxin A, microneedling, Endymed Skin Tightening, Endymed Intensif or Endymed Fractional Skin Resurfacing.

This patient was concerned about the fine lines around the mouth area but conscious she did not want any volume above and below the lip or in the lip itself. The area around the lip was treated with a fine filler and the results show the improvement in the vertical lip lines one week following treatment.
Perioral rejuvenation restores the lost volume, reducing lines and wrinkles and improving the overall appearance of the mouth area. These natural results can be obtained through a combination of different treatment methods including Obagi medical-grade skin care, microneedling, skin peels, Botulinum toxin A, dermal fillers, skin tightening, fractional resurfacing or Endymed intensif.
Yes, hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are used to help treat this area. It is important that the most appropriate hyaluronic acid is used for this delicate area to ensure you achieve the most natural look without over-protrusion. Examples include Juvederm Volbella® or Juvederm Volift® or Belotero Balance®
As part of your dermal filler aftercare we do recommend that you drink water. Drinking water can keep your skin hydrated and enhance the effect of hyaluronic acid fillers. After your treatment, we can also recommend skin care products that complement the effects of your result.
